Shane Williams, President and CEOCharacterized by Archean greenstone belts, the gold-bearing quartz veins and visible gold within the rock formations of Red Lake soon sparked a rush of activity. Among the numerous "rush and push" efforts, Madsen Mine’s establishment marked a significant boost to the local economy and served as a benchmark for mining practices.
Renowned as one of the most productive and extensive mines in the region, it yielded more than two million ounces of gold during its first operational phase from 1938 to 1972. Madsen was one of multiple mines developed in those decades. Activity at the mines ebbed and flowed with the price of gold but the region’s rich mineralization pulled miners back to Red Lake whenever gold gained some traction.
At Madsen, the end of the gold bear market in 2015 attracted new interest. The company that rebuilt the mine then reached a peak market valuation of $1.2 billion as excitement built around the potential to establish a modern Madsen mine.
That chapter of the Madsen Mine story did not end well, however. A combination of insufficient capital, lack of mine building experience, and COVID put that mine into bankruptcy. Today, however, we are at the cusp of another new chapter, brimming with future potential for investors. Publicly traded company West Red Lake Gold Mines (TSXV: WRLG) is set to author this new chapter for Madsen.
“We are laser-focused on advancing and developing our flagship Madsen Gold Mine in the Red Lake Gold District of Ontario,” says Shane Williams, president and CEO, WRLG.
WRLG aims to create significant new value in the now fully permitted Madsen gold mine, providing investors an accelerated opportunity to capitalize on a 1.7-million-ounce high-grade resource.
A Reliable Investment Vehicle
Gold has long been a preferred investment vehicle when investors face uncertainty. Today’s environment of high sovereign debt loads, high inflation, limited growth, and economic uncertainty are pushing investors towards the yellow metal – as evidenced by gold trading near all-time highs.

WRLG’s flagship mine, Madsen, ticks all the checkboxes and stands as a strategic choice. Acquired as a near-term production unit, it presents investors an excellent opportunity to take part as an experienced team turns an almost-built mine into a producing venture. The Madsen Mine currently has a defined resource with 1.7 million indicated ounces at 7.4 grams per tonne gold, plus roughly 400,000 ounces of inferred gold at 6.3 grams per tonne. With such a high-grade gold prospect and most needed equipment built-in (including a fully-functioning onsite mill), WRLG is poised to enter the "golden runway", which describes the way stocks often rise in value when a stock goes from spending money to build a mine to making money by operating a mine.
“Madsen Mine is already at the 99-yard line, and this quick path to production—the golden runway—sets us apart in an industry with few advanced gold producers,” says Williams.
Enhanced Research and Operations for Better Mining

WRLG has invested significant time and effort to improve the operational and financial constraints that stifled the Madsen mine’s potential in the past. Over the past year, WRLG has diligently worked through the aspects of the mine that needed attention, starting with infill drilling and resource remodeling and continuing with mine engineering, underground development, and infrastructure improvements. The century-old treasure trove is now primed for efficient extraction, holding the potential for substantial resource yields. WRLG aims to restart gold production in the second half of 2025.
The company’s progress through the “golden runway” phase is expected to increase investor interest, leading to a revaluation of its stock and a bright future for its operations.
“Our vision is to expand our portfolio and establish a new mid-tier Canadian gold mining company,” says Williams. “We have the experience in identifying undervalued mining prospects, the ability to access capital, and the experience in our team to repair mistakes, which gives us a natural edge in uncovering hidden value that has been overlooked by others in the industry.”
Madsen Mine’s new chapter is written by a team of seasoned miners, geologists, and capital markets operators. Under the leadership of Shane Williams, president and CEO, WRLG attracted strong management including CFO Harpreet Dhaliwal and VP Exploration Will Robinson and a board of directors with deep experience in Canadian gold mining, including Anthony Makuch and Duncan Middlemiss. Their collective experience underpins the company's trajectory and bolsters confidence in its prospects.

One of WRLG’s core strengths lies in its ability to seize strategic opportunities and secure significant investment. In just its first year owning the Madsen Mine, the company raised over $100 million, a rare achievement in the mining sector. This success is a testament to investor confidence in the leadership and the potential of their flagship project, the Madsen Mine.

Team WRLG is now laser-focused on ensuring that all mining operations perfectly meet (if not exceed) compliance requirements. Established in the heavily regulated Canadian market, they have adopted environmentally-safe and ethically-responsible activities as the cornerstone for the mine’s operational excellence. This strategy extends to fostering a workplace culture that puts safety and environmental concerns first.
As a publicly traded company, WRLG is also ardent in adhering to all regulations pertaining to governing disclosure and marketing. It has embedded strict policies to secure transparency and ethical conduct, thereby maintaining credibility and trust among investors and regulators. All these initiatives reaffirm WRLG’s commitment to bring in a new golden era for the Madsen Mine and the greater Red Lake landscape.
