In the automotive industry, manufacturing a vehicle requires thousands of different components from the engine to small mechanical elements and decorative interior items. In order to ship high-value goods and parts safely to a manufacturing company, it is essential to have packaging solutions that deliver ultimate protection during the transmission. However, the high shipping costs and fragmentation in the marketplace are presenting a great challenge for the packaging industry. This is precisely where Precision Fab Inc (PFI), a lean manufacturing organization steps in with its robust packaging solutions that resolve the issues associated with shipping costs and product safety. Established in 2003, PFI has grown by leaps and bounds from its humble roots in a retrofitted dairy barn to become a leading North American manufacturer of returnable packaging solutions. “Our affordable packaging solution comprises light yet strong returnable metal rack and soft packaging products, including totes, foam dunnage, textile bags, and plastic corrugated containers for OEMs and tier-one suppliers in automotive, aerospace, and material handling industry,” says Herbert Hildebrandt, Vice President Business Development of PFI.
The metal racks, bags and containers are manufactured precisely according to the shape and size of the items being packed, which helps in minimizing defective pieces, thereby reducing the wastage. As PFI’s packaging products are recyclable, it allows clients to achieve zero-landfill goals that, in turn, improve environmental health. With an exclusive focus on environmental sustainability, PFI offers returnable metal packaging solutions that will enable reusability as well as superior product protection and possible elimination of supply chain costs, unlike one-way packaging.
Another barrier of product consignment is order tracking to locate where the product has reached. To tackle this issue, PFI has implemented RFID tags compatible with their packaging products using which they can precisely identify where the products are at all time.
Primarily grown in the steel packaging industry, PFI offers its nimble and efficient packaging solutions at a reasonable cost to its customers across various industries. PFI’s flexibility and efficiency in customizing packaging can be illustrated through one of its customer stories wherein a tier-one supplier to the automotive industry faced issues with their packaging supplier. The tier-one supplier had deployed highly automated robotic loading and unloading of a particular part, which required precise measurements onsite due to which the packaging supplier was unable to supply packaging consistently. To provide them with its precision manufacturing packaging products, PFI developed a process to test the packaging in-house with their parts thereby ensuring flawless packaging. “The client was immensely benefitted with substantial cost savings with a reduction of rework and guaranteed consistency and quality. Along with becoming their top supplier for the past three model changes consistently,” extols Hildebrandt.
Rapidly scaling and evolving over 16 years, PFI has come a long way from starting with merely one machine. Today, the company has been named as Canada’s 406th of 500 fastest-growing companies. Moreover, PFI has been accredited as ISO 9001 for over a decade and American Welding Society Canadian Welding Bureau certified organization. “To expand our footprint in other industries, we are currently developing agricultural and renewable energy products alongside our ongoing progress in robotic welding, laser technology and water jets,” concludes Hildebrandt.
