Extraction: This is removing materials from the mine site by drilling, blasting, or digging.
Material handling: It consists of sorting and loading materials for transport to a disposal place or a processing facility.
Material processing: The final stage involves grinding, separating, crushing, refining, and smelting mined ore or other materials.
Surface mining methods
Surface mining is the process of removing the top layer of the ground to obtain the minerals below. Surface mining is specifically used to recover materials like sand, gravel, stones, coal, iron, and other metals.
Strip mining: Removing the mineral's surface from the dug-up area. With the use of massive machinery, such as bucket-wheel excavators, the soil, rock, and vegetation covering the mineral seam are removed. When the mineral is close to the surface, this form of mining makes sense. Strip mining becomes impractical and unnecessarily harmful to the terrain if the ore is too deeply buried.
Open-pit mining: Open-pit mining involves extracting ore from an open pit without filling it in.
Quarrying: Quarrying is the process by which miners cut hard stone blocks. Miners will also extract byproducts such as sand, gravel, or small stones from these hard stones. Open-pit mining makes quarrying possible.
Underground mining methods
Extracting minerals, metals, ore, and other goods deep underground requires different techniques. Various tools are required to extract materials from hard and soft rock. For example, tools used to dig soft materials may need to be more powerful to cut through hard rocks.
Blast mining: Explosives are used in blast mining, which is highly effective for removing hard rock from underground and surface mines to loosen rocks and create mining areas.
Retreat mining: This procedure eliminates ore pillars to maximize material recovery.
Room and pillar mining: While excavating the remainder of the needed material from the area, miners build ore pillars to support the ceiling. Employing continuous mining technology is an alternative to using workers to extract the material.
Sublevel caving: When ore bodies with a steep dip, sublevel caving is used. While the host rock on the hanging wall caves, the ore body is blasted from the top down. Footwall extraction avoids fracturing the ore.
