European Perspectives on Reducing Environmental Impact in Underground Mining
Underground coal mining in Europe is transforming significantly to balance environmental responsibility with operational efficiency and profitability. European manufacturers are embracing advanced green technologies, including automation and smart systems, to optimise energy use and minimise material over-extraction. Diesel-powered equipment is being phased out in favour of electric alternatives, with some operations integrating renewable energy sources such as solar and wind into their energy mix.
Key innovations include deploying carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems, which capture emissions at their source and store them securely in geological formations, and advanced water recycling and passive treatment solutions to address acid mine drainage (AMD). Waste management practices are also evolving, with tailings and sludge being repurposed for construction materials and backfilling techniques employed to restore mined-out areas. Biodiversity restoration efforts further complement these initiatives, underscoring a commitment to ecological recovery.
