The partnership between Barminco, Newtrax, and Sandvik will enable collaborative product development which will result in better products in the mining industry and advance the safety of the pedestrians working near heavy vehicles underground .
FREMONT CA: To improve the safety of pedestrians working near heavy vehicles (HVs) underground, Perenti’s Barminco, Newtrax and Sandvik are partnering to establish a new technology-led solution. There were 12 casualties containing HVs in the underground mining industry in Western Australia of which seven were pedestrians in between the years 2008 and 2018.
The companies stated that the mining machines weigh a minimum of 4.5 ton and perform in the domain of poor distinctness and people who work adjacent to these machines are in serious risk in an underground environment.
According to the partners, the combination of Barminco's scale and underground mining expertise with Newtrax's ability to develop collision avoidance systems, and the high penetration of Sandvik HVs with advanced controls places the partnership in a unique position to understand how people and equipment interact in underground mines.
The three companies are uniquely positioned to understand how people and equipment interact in underground mines, Barminco's scale and underground mining expertise, as well as Newtrax's ability to develop collision avoidance systems and the high penetration of Sandvik HVs with advanced controls. Newtrax has created a collision avoidance system that connects "intelligent" cap lamps to an underground HV cab's warning system. As the distance between the pedestrian and the vehicle decreases, the system gives the vehicle operator with virtual visibility of any pedestrians in the near region of their vehicle, as well as an escalating warning system to both the pedestrian and the operator. When the system detects any pedestrian wearing an intelligent cap lamp in the high-risk zone, the system shifts from warning to vehicle intervention, where the HV automatically reduces the speed and stops the machine. In this partnership, Newtrax is planning to install its next-generation Level 9 Collision Avoidance System across Barminco’s Sandvik fleet, incorporating the supply of intelligent cap lamps with the latest electronic safety aspects to Barmico’s underground mines. By january 2022, at one of Barminco’s underground sites, the technology will go through its first testing.
