Nickel, meanwhile, is a fundamental component in high-performance lithium-ion batteries, making it indispensable to the accelerating transition toward electric mobility. Together, these materials underpin major industrial and climate ambitions, reinforcing the need for secure and sustainable access.
Responsible Mining: A Framework for Coexistence
To balance the pursuit of domestic resource security with Europe’s ecological responsibilities, mining operations must operate within a rigorous framework grounded in the mitigation hierarchy: Avoid, Minimise, Restore, and Offset. Strong governance and permitting processes are essential, beginning with integrated, forward-looking land-use planning that aligns mineral development with regional conservation and socio-economic objectives.
